Some ask, how can we support the arts in such dire economic times?
The question is, how can we not support it?
We pledge to continue our work: as creators of plays that engage and inspire; as global cultural ambassadors; as educators of children through our free after-school programs; as economic revolutionaries through our weekly pay-what-you-can performances; as a financial force for LA (generating revenue for our community through the dual impact of our own budget and the wallets of our patrons each night); as a force to reduce recidivism in prisons through our Prison Project (with the State of California recognizing that arts education in corrections cuts the recidivism rate nearly in half); and as an inspiration to make art happen no matter what, through our volunteerism-based, economically and socially responsive artistic model.
At The Gang, we are so much more than the theatre company of our youth. We are now an educational institution, providing Los Angeles area schools with vital curriculum, which helps to fill the arts gap for hundreds of K-12 students. We have also been a force in more than 150 universities and high schools nationwide with our ‘Dead Man Walking’ Play Project, through which we engage students in theology, philosophy and law classes that address the moral issues and complexities of the death penalty in an open forum centered around the performance of a play. And our Prison Project utilizes Gang volunteers to provide in-prison theatrical training to inmates, fostering nonviolent expression and helping to reduce recidivism.
We cannot do this alone. Only 25% of our operating costs are generated through our box office. It is only through individual donors, major gifts and grants that that we are able to stage bold new works and reinterpreted classics that question convention and inspire discourse. It is only through your generosity that we may continue our community outreach activities, offered free of charge, which have transformed the lives of so many.
Now more than ever, we are looking for angels to help carry us through these rough economic times.
